Density
| To maintain consistency of a coating, the Density should remain constant from batch to batch. Density Cups, also known as Specific Gravity Cups or Picnometers, are used to determine the mass per unit volume (Specific Gravity) of a liquid at a given temperature. Specific Gravity is defined as the ratio of the density of a given substance to the density of water, when both are at the same temperature. Elcometer also offer a range of standard balances for laboratory use. |
Elcometer offers a range of laboratory scales for accurate measurements during the development of a coating. The Elcometer range of balances provides the user with a choice of standard, analytical or precision balances, with or without an enclosed cabinet.

A stainless steel precision instrument for determining the specific weight of paints and similar products.
This instrument consists of a cylindrical container and cover with a hole for exhaust of tested liquid excess.
These can be supplied with or without a tare weight for weighing on a balance.
How to use a Density Cup:
- Weigh the Cup when empty
- Fill with the liquid
- Place lid on the Cup*
- Weigh the Gravity Cup when full and divide the weight by the volume to determine the Specific Gravity
*Note that each Cup has an escape hole in the lid to allow excess liquid to escape. Any excess liquid should be removed before weighing.
